Harish's municipal policing unit (shitur ironi) is going operational. The municipality announced that after an extended period of professional preparation — inter-ministerial coordination, budget recruitment and completion of all required training and certifications — the new unit is in the final stretch before formally beginning activity, with forces due to start operating across the city within days.
The program was advanced by Deputy Mayor Moshe Ben Zikri, who holds the security and youth portfolios, and is designed to strengthen residents' personal security, increase visible presence on the ground and improve municipal enforcement.
Under the new arrangement, Israel Police officers and municipal inspectors will operate together in full cooperation, combining their respective powers and capabilities for more effective enforcement, maintenance of public order and a stronger sense of security in the city — a model already operating in many Israeli municipalities, in which jointly staffed patrols can address both criminal matters and municipal bylaw violations in a single response.
The launch caps a period in which the city has invested heavily in its security infrastructure, including the advanced camera network whose first delivery was completed in the city's northeast in late June.
Residents can expect to see the joint patrols in public spaces, commercial areas and near education institutions in the coming weeks.
